LockJaw EP

Chet Faker has been a longtime favorite artist of mine based purely on his vocal talent and fascinating lyrics. But in his 2013 collaboration with techno artist Flume he reached new heights musically. The first track, Drop the Game, opens immediately with a strong vocal hook by Faker. The first lyrics, delivered powerfully, give a direction for the rest of the three song EP. It set listeners on a path of internal struggle and paranoia. It makes for a very strong single that can hold its own. This was my first exposure to Flume’s DJ work and I have to say I was very impressed with how well he and Faker worked on this album.

The second track, What About Us, is slower and more techno than the first one. It involves more wayward lyrics and lots of echo. It makes everything very wistful and eerie. The background sounds really dominate the whole song and are great at setting the tone. It’s the kind of song you want to sit alone and listen to alone on a train at night and imagine the places you are going to go.

The last song, the cleverly named, This is Not a Song About a Girl, is the fastest paced of all the songs. It’s the one you are most likely to hear at a party. The lyrics lament on addiction and the differential  between what the mind knows is best and what the body craves and lusts for. The music is very easy to dance too but anything but peppy. It is a melodramatic anthem of ashamed but pure ecstasy. Around three minutes into the song the beat fades away and builds up into a showcase of Fakers vocal ability reminiscent of the first song.
